2022 Spring - Butterfly and flower paintings

 

Han's practice initially developed from traditional Korean literati painting of the 19th century, with her new work embracing and investigation the visual culture of Western contemporary art. This new series of works originates from the poem by Han, a "Butterfly's love looking for the flower" which have been created by combining traditional Korean art with Western ideas and inspired by her direct observation of wildflowers in nature. Just as Western pigments are combined with Korean traditional handmade paper, her work captures the encounter between the East and the West, highlighting her cultural position within the environment in which she works as a Korean-British artist.
