 Cherry blossom, photography (05, 2023)

Upon deciding to alter the exhibition plan, a need for additional images arose. The reasoning behind this expansion was my intention to stimulate the evolution of ideas by interconnecting images, thereby depicting the passage of time. Despite the challenges of balancing my artistic practice with the responsibilities of caring for my mother, who sustained an ankle injury in March, I persevered to craft an expansive visual narrative within a limited timeframe. My dedication to this exhibition fuelled my determination to produce my best work.

To initiate a thematic juxtaposition between the past and the present, I integrated images of plum blossoms and moon jars into my artistic practice. The incorporation of plum blossoms, symbolizing spring, was inspired by my exploration of the historical development of Korean art in Unit 2. Simultaneously, my research led me to recognize moon jars from the Joseon Dynasty as significant Korean cultural heritage. These historical motifs deliberately contrasted with the contemporary backdrop. Additionally, the inclusion of cherry blossom imagery, captured in May, was strategically chosen to symbolize the present moment, enriching the contextual layers of the exhibition.

In the final artwork, intersections were created with Korean text images on cherry blossoms, reflecting the symbolic elements of the unique culture formed by the overlap of the past and the present, as well as the interweaving of tradition and modernity.

The Cross

This story unfolds where Korean paper merges with Western paper,

Where Hangul confronts English, engaging in a linguistic caper,

Plum blossoms meet cherry blossoms, blooming side by side,

Tradition meets modernity, in art they both confide.

A vertical line meets a horizontal line, creating a cross,

On this ground of encounters, the future etches its gloss,

This story envisions the days yet unseen,

Through these meetings of cultures, where dreams convene.

- M Y Han Lee -

I initially created a poem implying the research findings that mirror the journey of my project, "The Cross." During the exhibition planning, my intention was to align these texts with images. However, my approach shifted, and I opted to craft the work solely through images. This decision aim to simplify the presentation, emphasizing the direct message conveyed by the images themselves.

a book introducing Korean paper (12pieces) / an exhibition catalogue /(12pieces)  a poetry book as a result of research (12pieces)

I have ultimately decided to create three types of artist books: one introducing Hanji, another summarizing the research journey in a poetry anthology, and the last being an exhibition catalogue. I chose to create these to connect them with my professional practice.

The idea of intersections, applied in the form of books, showcasing the Hanji used in my artwork to the audience, demonstrating the research journey through a poetry anthology, and connecting Korean and Western papers in the concept of the meeting of Eastern and Western cultures, led to the exploration and the creation of these three types of artist books.

Who is my audience/client?
Artists looking for new and unique creative processes and artists considering collaborations.

What am I focusing on?
My work focuses on conveying complex ideas through the materiality and composition of thought processes through sculpture, collage, and the process of constriction, emphasizing creative practice.
